چکیده

Title of Document: INTENSE LASER ACCELERATION OF QUASI-MONOENERGETIC PROTONS Tung-Chang Liu, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor Chuan S Liu, Physics By irradiating an ultra-thin overdense foil with an intense circularly polarized laser beam, the laser radiation pressure can push the foil forward. This scheme, laser radiation pressure acceleration, is one of the most actively studied laser-plasma acceleration scheme to generate quasi-monoenergetic proton beams. However, during the acceleration process, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability may destruct the foil into a bubble-like structure with interleaving high and low density regions. The laser will then penetrate through the underdense transparent regions and cease to push the electrons effectively. To overcome the short acceleration duration problem, a multi-species foil instead of a pure hydrogen foil is applied. The proton layer can continue to be accelerated by the Coulomb repulsion force from the partially shielded heavy ions even after electrons becoming underdense. The scheme combining shielded Coulomb repulsion and radiation pressure acceleration can significantly extend the acceleration time and obtainable proton energy with quasi-monoenergetic properties. In this work, we examine by numerical simulation the whole process of the laser proton acceleration scheme, including the energy evolution of radiation pressure acceleration, the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, the effect of shielded Coulomb repulsion using a multi-species foil and further improvement in the scheme itself to pursue a high energy quasi-monoenergetic proton beam accelerated by an intense laser beam. Laser-driven collimated tens-GeV monoenergetic protons from mass-limited target plus preformed channel

Proton acceleration by ultra-intense laser pulse irradiating a target with cross-section smaller than the laser spot size and connected to a parabolic density channel is investigated. The target splits the laser into two parallel propagating parts, which snowplow the backside plasma electrons along their paths, creating two adjacent parallel wakes and an intense return current in the gap betwee...

Laser Energy Conversion to Solitons and Monoenergetic Protons in Near-critical Hydrogen Plasma*

Recent theoretical and experimental studies point to better efficiency of laser-driven ion acceleration when approaching the critical plasma density regime. Simultaneously, this is the condition for observing solitons: "bubble"-like quasi-stationary plasma formations with laser radiation trapped inside. Exploring this regime with ultra-intense solid state lasers is problematic due to the lack o...

Control of proton energy in ultra-high intensity laser-matter interaction

Recent breakthroughs in short pulse laser technology resulted in (i) generation of ultrahigh intensity (2x10 W/cm) and (ii) ultra-high contrast (10) short pulses at the Hercules facility of the University of Michigan, which has created the possibility of exploring a new regime of ion acceleration – the regime of Directed Coulomb Explosion (DCE). In this regime of sufficiently high laser intensi...

Multicascade proton acceleration by a superintense laser pulse in the regime of relativistically induced slab transparency.

The regime of multicascade proton acceleration during the interaction of a 10(21)-10(22) W/cm2 laser pulse with a structured target is proposed. The regime is based on the electron charge displacement under the action of laser ponderomotive force and on the effect of relativistically induced slab transparency which allows realization of the idea of multicascade acceleration. It is shown that a ...

Proton Acceleration in Co2 Laser-plasma Interactions at Critical Density∗

Over the last several years, the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) mechanism in solid density plasmas produced by a laser pulse has achieved proton energies up to 10’s of MeV and quasi-monoenergetic beams at lower energies. Although solid-target experiments have demonstrated high-charge and low-emittance proton beams, little work has been done with gaseous targets which in principle can ...
